Monster Mutt | Building a Monster Truck Engine 2

On this episode, Gale breaks down the data from the Monster Mutt. We break down the data from episode 1 of the new series. As Gale Banks and the engineering team begin the development of a super-turbo diesel engine for monster trucks, the first step is examining existing supercharged methanol engines under extreme racing conditions.

In Part 2, Gale examines data recorded during Monster Mutt’s recent San Jose race. Hold on tight! This beast gets over 1,000 HP and loves air. Gale is data logging to know everything there is about the 540-inch, 1,400-horsepower blown alcohol motor that is in there. One of the key things Gale wants to know is the Manifold Air Density or MAD.

Gale is predicting the max horsepower but will see the accurate numbers using the Banks iDash DataMonster. The iDash records 100 parameters at 20 samples per second. All of that data is then stored on a micro SD card that comes in the package.

After reviewing the data, the next big question is how much power do we want to make when we put in the diesel engine.

On the next episode, Gale asks how bad-ass does a diesel have to be to work in a monster truck? We aim to find out. Here’s Gale fingerprinting a blown methanol Chevy Monster Truck engine to answer the question.
