Data Logging | Building a Monster Truck Engine 1

As Gale and the Banks engineering team begin the development of a super-turbo diesel engine for monster trucks, the first step is examining existing supercharged methanol engines under extreme racing conditions. Where do you start on a project like this? Data logging.

Gale explains how we’ll be data logging Monster Mutt Dalmation’s San Jose, CA race. At the heart of the system is a Banks iDash 1.8 Data Monster (currently known as the iDash 1.8 + data logging). It’s the most intelligent 2-1/16″ gauge available.

It all started in 1978, when Bob Chandler called Gale Banks Racing Shop in San Gabriel, CA. Bob called the engineering department at the shop to see about getting a Banks Turbocharged marine engine in his monster truck. The engineer hung up on Bob! It took another 40 years before Gale got his chance to work on the Monster Mutt.

Gale will be data logging the Monster Mutt, as shown here in the Monster Jam race.

The Banks iDash DataMonster is the ultimate tool for monitoring and recording automotive data while on the road or dynamometer. For more info on the iDash and its suite of sensor modules, head to bankspower.com/idash.

On episode 2, Gale examines data recorded during Monster Mutt’s recent San Jose race. Hold on tight! Watch the whole Building a Monster Truck series on our YouTube channel.
