Cleaner MAP Sensor, Better MPG

David from Fondupot’s Garage chronicled the installation of a Banks MAP Sensor Spacer Kit on his 2024 Duramax. “The sensors are notorious for being gunked up with stuff from the emissions crap,” explains the seasoned mechanic. “Over time, if it gets gunked up enough, it’ll cause a problem. They’re easy enough to clean. But Banks sells these kits at a relatively inexpensive, and helps stretch the life of having to clean them. I cleaned them once before when I got the truck, and they were filthy. That was at 28,000 miles. The truck now has 33,000 on it.” With just 5,000 miles since they’re last cleaning he shows the amount of buildup each sensor had accumulated.

David wraps up his video with a simple explanation on how the MAP Sensor Spacer Kit works: “Basically, what it does is that it pulls that sensor out of the stream of the intake with it’s exhaust particulate. The sensor still does what it does for the computer, but its no longer getting contaminated by all of the exhaust gases recirculating.”

00:05 hey everybody how’s it going today I’m going to be installing a pair of banks map sensor spacers on my l5p this is a 2024 durx l5p it has two map sensors right here on the intake one there and one there and these are notorious for being uh gunked up with the exhaust

00:27 gases and whatnot and just the stuff that gets recirculated through the engine with all the emissions crap on these engines over time if it gets gunked up enough yeah it can cause a problem it’s easy enough to clean but uh Bank sells these kits that are relatively uh you know inexpensive to

00:42 help stretch the life of having to clean them I still recommend you clean them uh maybe every couple oil changes just to check on them you can just use a simple MAF sensor cleaner like this CRC makes one I’ve cleaned these once before when I got the truck they were filthy uh that

00:57 was around 28,000 Mi the truck now has around 33,000 mil on it so we’ll see how much it’s changed since just that amount of time before you go and unplug anything I would recommend you disconnect your two batteries uh so you get the one over here on the passenger side and the one over there on the

01:13 driver’s side I’ve already done that and I’m going to dig into this now okay to remove the sensors we should disconnect the Locking mechanisms on the clips just like that and then you can squeeze the back side of the clip and unplug it this one on the back is a little bit

01:27 different you have to open the Locking Tab and then and using a very small screwdriver you have to go through the front here and gently lift the clip inside and then you can slip that one off the bolts that hold those on are 10 mm so I’m going to take those off this shouldn’t be very

01:53 tight careful you don’t lose your little bolts then the sensors will just pop out of their spots gently tug on them there is a gasket that’s holding it so there we go we got that one and we got that one let’s take a closer look all right so here’s that lower one and these were clean I mean I

02:20 cleaned the heck out of them so there is a little bit of buildup on them as you can see not terribly bad but they were a lot dirtier when I cleaned them um at 28,000 miles see this one it’s got a decent amount of Gunk on it so we’re going to clean those up with this mass airflow sensor cleaner and

02:48 take a look at them before we install the uh Banks spacers all right so I got the sensors cleaned up you can see you can actually see the blue and the electrode there on that one and this one you can see down in there make sure they’re dry before you install them that

03:03 stuff evaporates pretty quickly but just make sure they sit for a couple minutes so that all the fluid gets uh out of there so here is the bank spacers and uh there’s one for each obviously like I said it comes with new hardware only uh one of these will only fit in the

03:18 correct spot so like this one is not for this sensor because the holes don’t line up so just figure out which ones fit where like that’s going to line up on that one and use the bolts they give you to attach it so like I’m going to send this guy down into there now and then I’ll tighten it

03:38 up with the hardware that they give they’ve got a little nice Torx bolt they do include a wrench too which is nice if you don’t have Torx tools you don’t have to go crazy tightening these up just get them snugged so there’s one and then this one the lower sensor I believe

04:01 just line it up might have to wiggle it a little bit for that gasket to seat down in there I don’t expect to see or feel any difference right off the bat but if it means I got to clean these less often then I’m all for it all right so I’ve got the sensors installed on the spacer

04:20 from Banks and now we can put the spacers with the sensors back on the intake so take your sensors line them up to where they go this one goes here take take the bolt they provide and basically what this does is it pulls that sensor out of the stream of the intake with the exhaust in it

04:42 with the particulate so that it still does what it does for the computer but it’s no longer getting contaminated by all those uh exhaust gases re recirculating just make sure you get that nice and snug while I’m here I’m going to pop this sensor back on and then this one goes back

05:11 here our bolt thread it down and take your sensor plug wire slip it over lock the connector make sure everything’s nice and snug and that’s basically it reconnect your negative battery terminals and you’re done I’ll make another video in another couple thousand miles seeing how dirty

05:33 those are we can compare them to how dirty they were after the five or 6,000 miles since I cleaned them last if you like this video give it a thumbs up love it if you subscribe stay tuned for new videos see you next time later
