Exhaust Back Pressure Testing
The Banks Mechanical Engineering Department just put the finishing touches on the instrumentation of the shop’s 2020 L5P Duramax. The truck already had test instrumentation in the engine compartment due to intake, intercooler, and tuner development, but these additional sensor placements are now throughout the exhaust system from the turbine outlet to the tailpipe tip.
By using the Banks 4-Channel Analog Modules and strategically placing pressure sensors at key locations the exhaust flow and back pressure can accurately be measured, showing how changes to the intake and anything to the tailpipe can either make a performance difference or a hindrance to overall performance. All differences in pressure readings, including exhaust scavenging and engine pumping parasitic losses, are easily captured using the data logging features of the iDash DataMonster.
