00:00 hey we’ve got a sweet 2022 LP5 uh Duramax and uh it’s a nice truck the guy wants a few upgrades on it um Jake’s going to go grab it i’ll tell you why we’re doing them so 22 GMC Sierra we’re doing Banks oil pan and Banks rear diff cover engine service while we’re there and diff

00:31 service as well so we’ll get it up in the air and get it to park same as the last one the cake have done it before to get the oil pan out you got to drop this crossmember and then drop the diff they recommend you dropping the diff completely out a lot of the times on

00:59 these newer Duramaxes rubber mounts you can undo past your side and just droop the diff and it’ll hang far enough out of your way that you can snake the old oil pan out and the new oil pan in so little tip to speed up if you’re ever doing one on a time crunch speed up a

01:15 little bit but not definitely not too bad to do so get some fluids draining and then we’ll go from there there you go the gentleman’s going to have some upgrades that uh will make his truck I think a little better a differential cover that’ll cool his diff rear diff oil off better and an oil pan

01:49 on the front it’s not big enough and even as big as it is it’s uh it holds oil so and I’m going to show you how much oil it holds we’re going to pull it down this is a factory oil pan on an L5P so we’ve drained all the oil out of it like you would on a normal oil change

02:02 but I’m going to show you when we pull the pan down how much oil is left in that pan that’s one of the problems with it the other problem is you can get an oil pan that’s got two more quarts in it which is always a good thing on a diesel bank says you got to drop this whole

02:13 thing down here on this side the differential but you can snake his pan out you got to drop the one side in the crossmember it’s not that hard m and uh Super Jake here will show you how to do it super Jake super Jake that’s your name super Jake so what I did on the

02:26 last one is undo these two diff bolts your stevia axle collapse everything will kind of hang and it gives you an extra 2 3 in here and you can sneak it out when you want to be quick and and you’re still thorough you know you can still get all your surfaces cleaned

02:39 everything still checks out but makes it a lot easier to not drop the differential and just droop it instead bob this crossmember definitely has to come out of the way come on just like that have enough room to get pan out that gets those out of the way there we

03:22 go that gives you You don’t necessarily need to remove those you just need them to wiggle so you get them out of your way you slide them off to the end of that stud now we have access to all our pan bolts the hardest part is cleaning the pan surface the mounting surface up here and

03:50 they use silicone from the factory so none of it’s fun to undo oh come on hands one tip when you’re pulling oil pan never take all the bolts out loosen them all but leave one or two somewhere holding your pan to the block still because if there is any amount of oil in the bottom

04:17 of this pan and you smack it and it falls you’re going to yard cell oil all over yourself your shop and your floor input clip of Miles and Jason there’s oil in there well I wouldn’t normally do it this way i’d take a little more time but since it’s Friday and it’s three o’clock it’s

04:42 getting a new pan so we don’t got to worry about the shape of the old one so we’re just going to do what it takes to get it off real quick here and pry bar and a hammer ought to take care of it i really thought that would pop by now gm really likes their RTV boy i tell

05:04 you that and it’s some good stuff i don’t know where they get it holy crap that’s a thumb yeah it’s good noises right there the hollower the sound the looser the pan yeah so this bolt it’s a bell housing bolt and if you look it hangs through so as you go to drop your pan

05:30 it’ll get in your way and you won’t be able to get the rear pan flange out loosen it up bank send you a new one in the kit because it is a torque to yield bolt we’re just going to leave that bolt loose there we go now I have my bolt in so I’m not going to yard sail anything oh it just

06:02 dripped right on my ear i got it okay take your last bolt out that you leave in when you’re taking a pan off and there we go and that’s why you leave bolts in it all you factory guys that still run this pan when you do an oil change this is drained for 10 minutes with the motor at engine temp so

06:26 an upgrade with the Banks pan is they’ve designed it so that will drain out so you no longer have oil but if you look you can actually see why it holds oil the shoulder for your bolt that’s got the threads in it is up a/4 of an inch and then I mean that’s up the roll of

06:40 your pan so your oil oil only drains to the top of that hole and then it holds I’d say that’s about half a quart 2/3 of a quart somewhere in there so you never get a complete oil change so about a red solo cup’s worth that’s about half a quart I would say still that stays and I mean there’s

07:00 still a little bit more in there but you’re going to clean a surface and put a new pan on one thing I’ve learned to do don’t forget this when you reassemble it or you will blow your motor up but while you’re working under here so your pickup doesn’t drip on you just wrap a rag around it give that one

07:36 more go around as we go yeah we can actually show you so if you look down in here comparison to your old pan see how that edge is flush so all the oil even when your drain plug is in all the oil will come out instead of it being stepped up a quarter of an inch fins for extra cooling helps air flow

08:01 through your oil help the motor run a little cooler holds a couple extra cords and it’s fancy it looks nice so we don’t have a sensor on this truck banks supplies you with a Allen plug to fit that hole so if you don’t have a sensor on your truck you don’t got to worry

08:16 about it you can plug it and good to go a nice O-ring on the oil pan what I like to do a little bit of dialectric you know this is first install so I always grease them after that you’re going to have engine oil down here and it’s going to be you know wet anyway so you don’t

08:31 got to worry about it but first install right out of the box everything is nice and dry so and we’ll torque that once it’s in the truck we’re just going to fingertight it for now and then once we get it installed we’ll put a final torque on everything and be good to go

08:46 banks also gives you all new mounting bolts for your oil pan they’re nice stainless bolt you don’t got to worry about rust corros and anything like that heat heat dalton was showing me the video of the one falling off when Miles was helping you back there the oil pan dude I’m bad

09:49 about dropping really oh I am you want to hear what’s bad what’s that i did that on a 73 oh really that’s a lot of oil on a 73 it was quite a bit come on go on the studs it doesn’t want to play it’s got to go back it’s got to go there it goes okay there you go i got it

10:14 yeah now it’ll stay okay I see it now goes like this holder taper what’s funny is you got a 50/50 shot and you always get it wrong it’s not very 50/50 of it is it no more like 7030 oh you don’t have a L that first weighted it do an oil filter while I’m under here and then I can move the rear

10:56 diff ow finger i need to go buy a new one of these have you ever run the DeWalts they start doing that all of them start doing it do they this thing does it really bad and then like you’ll be going and just the rattle of using it’ll it’ll shut off or fall out yeah it just the impact’s just

11:15 like nope no more working that’s why there we go all right now we’ll move to the rear differential he keeps up on his service intervals really well no metal good to go all right here we go what do you buy okay so the conclusion is Duramax is awesome this design sucks though so

14:03 Duramax owners out there do yourself a favor and upgrade

Technician Jake from Dave’s Auto walks us through the installation of the Banks CoolRunner Oil Pan and the Ram-Air Differential Cover on a 2022 GMC Duramax. Jake shares a few tricks along the way that makes the job of changing out the oil pan easier for him, and shows how not to “yard sale” (spill the oil that is left in the pan) yourself with oil, and that’s enough oil to fill up a red Solo cup.

The installation of the Ram-Air Differential Cover goes so smoothly that Jake has no words of wisdom to speak of. It’s just off with the old, and on with the Banks.

Miles Bell, General Manager of Dave’s Auto, concludes the video by holding up the stock oil pan and saying “Duramax is awesome, this design sucks though. Do yourself a favor and upgrade.”
