Banks CoolRunner Oil Pan – Lower Temps, More Capacity

“Today’s the day,” says Josh from JB Reviews excitedly. “We’re putting on the Banks CoolRunner Oil Pan!” He’s excited for a reason, too. His new pan will give him:

  • Reduced fluid temps
  • Two extra quarts of capacity
  • Temp sensor port
  • Complete drainage

00:01 What’s up, guys? Today is the day. Now, you’ve seen I’ve done the cold air intake on my truck. I also added a Derringer and I have the Boost Tube turbo inlet. I didn’t install those things—the guy over here did.

00:20 What’s up? How you doing? Yeah, that’s Truck Stuff over here. And he’s actually draining my oil. Why? Because we’re going to give this sexy lady a nice new pair of underwear—we’re putting the Banks Oil Pan on here. Nice. Yeah. Sexy. Everybody loves it in black, right? Oh, yes. Better cooling, more oil.

00:44 The biggest thing is the extra quart capacity. People can argue if that really helps, but the main reason for this pan is heat dissipation. The way Gale designed these—with internal fins that match directly with external fins—they dissipate heat way faster than the stamped steel pans Duramaxes come with.

01:26 There it is. Out of battery. Look at that oil—it’s black. And this oil only has about 3,000 miles on it. Not much idling at all. We’ll give it a few more minutes to drip out, then get ready to pull this thing. I’m excited.

01:50 Doesn’t look like it, but we’re making progress. We loosened some of these lines so we can get the bolts out and drop the pan. Got the master at work. Doing this on your back is a beast, but it is what it is. Crossmember’s coming out for more clearance.

02:48 Stay tuned—we’re doing a whole series on how to bulletproof your Duramax diesel. You see how dark that oil is? Yeah. I’ve got a great product coming with a promo code for you.

03:24 Quick break to discuss the Banks oil pan. This is a new product, just released a few months ago. If you plan on keeping your truck longer than 5 years, or if you rack up 30k+ miles a year, this is a must-have.

03:45 Main benefit: heat rejection. These trucks get hot, and hot oil breaks down faster. Banks added internal and external cooling fins—19 deep-cut radiator fins that increase surface area to air moving under the truck.

05:03 It’s die-cast, with smoother interior surfaces to improve oil flow. They also added an anti-aeration dimple under the oil pickup to redirect oil smoothly upward.

05:35 Another plus—you can add two extra quarts of oil. And unlike stock, this pan drains fully. No leftover oil sitting in the sump, no sludge buildup.

06:11 Banks also added a temp sensor port. Great for cold climates if you want to monitor oil temps directly.

06:29 The factory Duramax pan has a design flaw—it can’t drain fully. That leaves sludge and soot behind. Banks fixed it so every drop comes out.

07:23 Extra soot, fuel dilution—stuff you don’t want staying in your oil. The Banks pan lets you cleanly flush it out every change.

08:03 Banks supplies all the hardware, a sealant gun, and even a shorter bolt to make the install easier.

08:22 Hardest part? Getting the stock pan off. It’s glued tight. Careful not to mar the aluminum block surface. Good tools help—picks, prybars, hammerable trim tools.

10:03 This is the main reason you need the Banks oil pan. See how high the stock drain plug sits? Oil can’t escape from there. Dealerships don’t extract the leftover, so you’re always carrying dirty oil. Banks pan fixes that.

11:01 Josh is cleaning the mating surface now—scraping off the excess sealant. Not an easy job, definitely better as a two-man install.

11:40 We did drop the diff tube for extra clearance. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need a ton of sealant. Flat surface against flat surface is enough.

12:10 And there it is—installed and looking good. Honestly, this is a two-man job for most.

12:31 Stay tuned for part two—we’re adding one more upgrade to the Banks oil pan to really bulletproof this Duramax. Thanks for watching. Be sure to subscribe. [Music]
