Flyin’ Miata Turbo Kit Developed with iDash Pro Monitoring

“The Miata was already one of my favorites with 130 horsepower,” says Smoking Tire Podcast’s Matt Farah as he rips through the hills above Los Angeles. “And now it makes 250 horsepower at the tires!” Matt was behind the wheels of Flyin’ Miata’slatest turbocharged masterpiece featuring a Banks iDash Pro. Flyin’ Miata’s Brandon Fitch, Director of Product Development, has gone into great detail of the capabilities of the iDash and how it was instrumental in the development of the turbo kit. It was critical in measuring and logging the turbo’s efficiency and making sure the catalytic convertor lit off when it’s suppose to. The result is an all-inclusive turbo kit that’s soon to be 50-state compliant.

00:00 what’s up everybody i’m Matt Farah and welcome to a beautiful day on the mountain this is a 2013 Mazda MX5 Club with a power retractable hardtop and some nice looking sporty wheels but it’s got a secret because this is actually the test mule for Flying Miata’s Carb
00:22 Legal Turbo Kit that’s right the company known for making your little Japanese roadsters go stop and turn faster has now made a California carb compliant turbo kit for the NC Miata big power 91 octane and it’ll pass California smog i couldn’t wait to try it for myself so
00:46 Zach and I are up here on the mountain to give it the beans and see what it’ll do guys look at this it’s so tiny it’s so cute it’s so delightful it’s the Vantrew E1 Pro and listen up if you are rolling around in 2025 without a dash cam it’s like leaving your phone out at the bar
01:10 with no password you’re exposed from insurance scams to protection uh if you drive for ride share to valet parking to documenting interactions with law enforcement a dash cam is one of those set it and forget it items that you don’t really think about much until you
01:28 really need it and if you get lucky you can even earn some cash on YouTube like me the new Vantru E1 Pro is the smallest 4K dash cam on the market which is important because it’s taking up valuable real estate on your windshield maybe even in a sports car with a small
01:47 one but that doesn’t mean it’s not powerful it’s got a starvis sensor with full 4K 30fps video which is what we shoot our car reviews on it also features audio noise reduction sensor to accurately capture interior conversation and it’s got privacy mode and mileage statistics for reliable distance
02:07 reporting if you drive for an employer even if your car’s odometer is a lying liar crucially it’s got 5 GHz Wi-Fi making for lightning fast access to the camera through your smartphone plus big one it’s got plate pickics what is that you say it’s an advanced technology that
02:27 can automatically adjust resolution frame rate and many other functions to ensure license plates and other crucial evidence comes out clear as a bell and for those of us photo nerds out there rejoice at the standard included circular polarizer filter which drastically cuts down on those pesky
02:48 windshield reflections this is a tiny little powerhouse right here and you can get one for yourself vantru’s been protecting drivers for 10 years so happy anniversary to a company that is truly driven hit the link in the video description to get a special TST price
03:04 for a limited time only on the Vantrew E1 Pro dash cam and stay protected while out on the open road and thanks to Vantrew for sponsoring today’s video [Applause] [Music] picture this i’m at my desk at Westside Collector Car Storage and I get a call from Flying Miata and they say “Matt our
03:42 NC development mule is finished at the California EPA office it is going to be given an EO number which means carb certification can you pick up the car and store it until we can come get it at Westside i said absolutely and then I was like well can we have a go and they
04:03 said well it’s a development mule it’s not a very pretty car the the paint’s a little tired i said but it’s a turbo Miata for California i must have a go and so here we are so this is based on the turbo kit that they’ve already been selling but it’s now gotten approval for California
04:30 and the way they do that is either by taking apart the stock cat and putting those internals in a new cat or they can sell you a new OEM cat assembly that works with the turbo okay and this kit it comes with everything you need it’s $5,000 if you have your own cat or
04:53 $6,000 if you need one of theirs it then is about according to them 20 hours of labor to install which you could do yourself or you could pay somebody to do and that might cost you around three grand they recommend some other options as well as including suspension uh brake
05:13 pads and fluid and possibly the clutch okay but the Miata was already one of my favorites and now we have 250 horsepower at the tires now this car made 130 horsepower at the tires when it was stock so you’re effectively talking about doubling the car’s power and you can hear the sounds you can feel
05:41 the torque it’s a good time and we’ve also got the Flying Miata Coney coilovers the lightweight wheels and some pretty sticky Continental tires and so what we can gather from that is at around 2500 lb this car feels basically invincible in the canyons these Continental Summer tires feel like
06:04 slicks the resistance to turning in is zero it just doesn’t have a problem with anything and that is pretty freaking exceptional i mean we’re always looking for value in performance right and for a lot of people the deal breaker in a Miata is that it’s not very fast this one’s
06:35 fast this This is probably a 12second car so the internals of the engine are not touched at all okay stock MX5 motor with 11:1 compression they then run 11 PSI on top of that if your car has a automatic gearbox they run a little less eight and a half PSI because they don’t want to
07:05 blow your torque converter up so that is should be good for everything you should have pretty much factory reliability uh Flying Miata says the highway fuel economy is the same as factory that’s great you have these amazing noises [Applause] the car can run a little hot if you
07:29 don’t take care for instance after this canyon blast I’m going to have to let the car cool down while idling for a few minutes i won’t be able to just shut it off straight away so there are there’s some little little things you have to give right just little ones in order to
07:49 take advantage of this type of performance i mean these Miatas are so nice when you get them to around this 220 to 250 at the tires you can ride that wave of torque and the response is is pretty good there is if I had to make a criticism in this tune there’s a little hesitation when
08:20 you squeeze onto the throttle about 10% throttle coming out of the corner if you’re a little heavier on the pedal and you get through that you wouldn’t notice it it’s what you get from a dyno tune that might need a little more in the streetility calibration department
08:42 woo it sounds nice inside the car it’s not all that loud outside the car which is good you can get a real sort of stealth speed thing happening and although I have the top up for audio purposes I mean driving an MX5 with the top down and this turbo humming right there that’s a real treat man woof
09:11 this is like really fast like you would like I’ve gone up this road this pace in $150,000 cars and this is doing it no problem and I I bet this car is not even 20 grand maybe it’s 20 grand or 25 grand but it’s shifter’s great clutch is light i mean these stock seats suck but that
09:33 could easily be fixed there’s I I I don’t have a lot of complaints here you do have to adjust yourself a very little bit you have to use a little bit of brain power uh and then of course there’s the cost of entry but like wow what a great time thank you to Flying Miata for letting us have a go
09:56 that is that is really something check this out if you’re in California and wanted a Miata but thought maybe it was too slow I mean this this is the thing it’s here now zach needs to have a go turbo truck the answer really is Miata zach would you like to get up early no to drive a
10:21 turbocharged Miata yes yes I would i owned a Miata i owned an NA Miata that had a bunch of flying Miata suspension parts on it love that car super fun sticky tires always too slow drove a bunch of different Miatas over the years ending most recently of course with the ND in RF and uh also I think
10:44 club sport form great engine the smoothest thing in the world and with 180 horsepower you go “Yeah that feels powerful it feels like something.” But the power of a Miata is really only fun in the corners or when the corners are close together on a really big straightaway you get bored you do cuz
11:04 Miata Power even with 180 of it was always like arriving too early to a New Year’s Eve party and it’s a party that gets good it It’s a memorable party and all your friends are there and it’s just it’s a really nice time and you go “That was fun.” But it’s not a party that you talk
11:24 about like after you’ve had two beers and you’re like “Remember that thing that now that was a New Year’s Eve that requires a bit more horsepower in stock form the NC has a power to weight ratio of about 15 lb for every horsepower with this kit on and the additional roughly
11:44 100 crank horsepower it’s added it drops the power to weight ratio to 9 12:1 that is a huge jump i mean that’s how math works of course you engineers and mathematicians are out there going “Yes that’s how percentages work Mr clapping but it’s just rare that I drive a car
12:00 that’s modified and it has changed the power to rate ratio by such a huge percentage at at 8 to 9/10 in a canyon I’m I’m flying out of corners no pun intended the grip from these tires is fantastic and the way you can flow these cars in the corners because they’re so
12:21 narrow you can actually really apex a corner without crossing double yellow can move within the lane you put that together with peak torque that now hits 1,000 RPMs earlier than the stock car did and the peak power happens at the same place at 7,000 RPM you get this
12:41 really great build of power all the way i mean this is a party that just builds and builds and builds and gets better and better and better you can feel the car getting a little warm feel like I’ve lost a little bit of the top end power but that torque punch at 4 grand is so nice and
13:00 obviously it’s not just making torque lower down than the stock car was it’s making a lot more of it and sometimes when you add a turbo kit it changes the character of the engine drastically which I don’t like i have said many many times I like superchargers because they
13:17 feel like an NA power uh power curve but this feels exactly like the stock engine it’s just better there’s just more it’s like having two stock engines so $8 to $9,000 for the kit plus a car for that money you do have a lot of options you could get a Mustang GT of various years
13:38 you could get Corvette C5 or six maybe a C5 Z06 which would be very fast um or maybe even like a high mileage Grand Sport so the competition it is fierce for outright speed but anyone who’s driven a Miata and I know that you guys are so tired of hearing this they are so special the
14:01 size the ergonomics the steering the shifting like it is everything you want in a sports car experience it really is the only thing it lacked was power and now that problem is solved cuz like every car problem it’s solved with money this is just so good it’s so good
14:25 you don’t really appreciate the rate at which a car can change direction until you’ve been driving 3500 lb to 4,000 lb modern sports cars for a long long time you forget that ability to just nose back and forth you know it’s just like a hound searching for something searching
14:44 for something just moving so much quicker versus a horse that’s what modern cars feel like they feel like a horse that’s looking over here are there flowers over there can I eat that grass um I would say a bigger brake kit is a good choice they have one this car has upgraded pads and fluid but even
15:04 with that I I’m starting to feel like a little something underneath the pedal almost like a micro warp of the rotor if you have this kind of speed you should get the requisite control of that speed so upgrade your braking system and that’s it the way this car sits is perfect the stance is excellent
15:28 honestly just seeing this thing on these wheels on these tires meaty fitment what up uh it has really changed my opinion of the NC for for me for a long time it was always last place in the Miata lineup uh aesthetically and it was also known as the heavy one but nah this is good

The diagram for the Banks sensor network, shown in the example for a turbocharged 4-cylinder, not only provides the tuner with the information for evaluation, but by reading the temperature and pressure, both pre-turbo and post-turbo, you’ll be able to evaluate compressor efficiency. There’s no more guessing if the turbocharger is going into choke because the housing is too small, or the wheel blade count is too high, or if the turbo is too big for the performance that you want.

The intercooler can also be evaluated to determine if it effectively cools the charged air from the turbo, which is crucial for improving air density, more efficient fuel burn, and increasing power. This takes the guesswork out of intercooler core selection and provides real data. The iDash, sensor modules, and sensors are the tools you need to measure every aspect of your engine’s performance, whether it’s stock or modified.
