Oil Cooler Replaces Time Bomb
Full Video Transcript
00:00 so in today’s video I’m going to show you guys exactly how to install a Banks l5p oil cooler upgrade kit for really any Duramax yeah the stock cooler failed gasket failed and as far as I’m concerned this engine has a ton of miles so I’m going to be switching it out with
00:16 the lower mile engine which I have here so head over to the other channel and see the drama that I have going on over there you see these engine coolers are very prone to failure so it’s extremely important that you guys change this out as soon as possible you just never know
00:27 if they fail internally and your engine oil does get mixed in with your coolant and unfortunately that’s the case that I’m having right now but I’d hate to see you guys traveling with your family or pulling a trailer and this happens to and you’re like 1,500 Mi away and your
00:40 engine eventually just starts to overheat while you’re driving now don’t get me wrong I’m not saying that that will happen but it has happened to many people in the past I’m going to go ahead and just say that this is a ticking time bomb and it’s extremely important that
00:50 you change this out and when talking about engine oil getting into your cooling system that just means it’s going to build up a lot of sludge and a lot of Gunk and it’s going to restrict a lot of passages and flow for example your radiator your heater core the passages and your heads and not to
01:04 mention your turbo but the good news is that the newer Duramaxes the l5p Duramax version the engine oil coolers are a little more upgraded so you’re not really going to have those issues and you’re able to install these parts on your older Duramaxes so if you spend the
01:17 money spend some hours installing this part it will definitely be worth your time I promise so every durx should have this modification but if your oil cooler is leaking and you have to reseal it you might as well go ahead instead of Outsourcing parts to do this up upgrade
01:30 but with all that being said let me show you what’s in the kit provided and how to install it let’s get started I know a lot of you guys like the banks products so I did reach out to those guys and they set me up with an affiliate link so if you guys ever decide to purchase
01:42 anything Banks use my uh link my banks.com link that would be super awesome if you guys can do that but again I’m going to leave that link in the description for this product what do we have in the package they’re going to give you an oil filter which is pretty awesome it’s going to be an AMS oil oil
01:57 filter they don’t mess around there’s really not much here I mean it seems like a pretty straightforward install let me show you guys how to do this I think it’s neat that they implemented a oil tap right here so you can install a probe and check your oil temperatures as you’re driving so you
02:11 can monitor that it’s pretty important but overall it’s going to keep the engine oil lasting a whole lot longer for sure because you’re keeping the oil temperatures down if you look at some of the generations of Duramaxes going all the way back from 2001 they’ve gradually
02:23 gotten bigger and the reason why is because they’ve upgraded the towing capacity for example the brand new 2024 Duramaxes have maximum payload capacity of 38,000 lb and some of the Fords out there can actually go up to 40,000 lb which is absolutely insane but let’s be
02:39 honest you’re working your engine pretty hard and you want to keep those oil temperatures low and if you’re hauling a lot of weight it’s important to have an upgrade like this but from my understanding if you have an older Duramax like a 2010 and you take one off of a
02:51 2024 it won’t simply just bolt on you will need some extra parts for that but the guys at Banks made it super simple so you don’t have to Outsource any parts all right so I’m I’m going to remove this from a long block engine sitting on a pallet it’s a lot easier to see it’s
03:04 going to be a lot harder to do with it on the truck but it’s just a general example of how to do it there’s a full install video which I’ll leave in the description as well from Banks to show you guys how to do it with the truck on uh but there will be some modifications
03:16 to the manifold depending on your model of truck so just understand that this is the front of the engine this is the water pump this is the tube that connects to the water pun after remve that first all right and that should do it there’s five bolts all around they connect to
03:48 it and it should just come right out but here we go that’s what it looks like with everything off I’m going to go ahead and remove this this tube cuz we’re going to be reusing that tube and here’s a quick side by-side comparison as you guys can tell this is sitting a lot taller than this one and
04:08 obviously because the oil cooler inside there is a lot larger than this one it’s actually pretty small I should just take that apart and show you but you guys can see the difference as far as install goes you can take your cell phone and just highlight this and it’ll pull up a
04:20 set of instructions and they’re pretty clearcut straight to the point you don’t even need to watch a video to do this I guess you could watch the video If you’re trying to find a different technique or different tool to use to get to that certain bolt you’re having
04:31 trouble with like for example the bell housing bolt cuz I know you have to remove that in order to get to the back end to loosen this off but I went ahead and lubricated all these O-rings and I still need to do this one yet these two on the back which are already in there which is good
05:00 in the kit included you will have Loctite so apply that to all of the bolts that come with it all right once you’ve lubricated all the O-rings and all the mating surfaces for example to the block did lubricate the inside of this housing so we’re going to go ahead and oh I left that
05:21 Loose as well the two long bolts the 20 mm will require the two large washers that come with the kit to be installed which will be on the top and bottom so go ahead and work that in and again leave everything loose last but not least we’re going to go ahead and insert this and run the bolts
05:49 in all right I want to highlight one thing really quick that I think was brieze over the instructions on what I got from the kit as you guys can see this bolt right here it’s really hard to get to it’s actually sandwiched in between the bell housing right here and
06:03 right in there so you really can’t get into it but you’re going to have to do your best to fish it in inside there and the only way you’re going to be able to tighten it from inside there is to use an open-end 13 mm wrench I think once you get down to the very bottom you’re
06:15 going to be able to use a ratchet wrench but I don’t think there’s a way you’re going to be able to torque that bolt down so just do your very best I think that’s going to be the only thing that you’re going to get hung up on I could be wrong but if you’re installing this
06:25 first and that second that’s going to be your hardest part of the job is that one Bolt right there but again use a nice thin open-end wrench you should be able to get right in there oh yeah now that we’re done with that we’re going to go ahead and torque this down to 18
06:54 ftlb and of course once everything’s installed go ahead and spin on your filter but that is it I hope you guys enjoy your new oil cooler but again I will leave a link in the description of a video of how to do that with the cab on the frame but hopefully you guys enjoyed the video if you guys are
07:09 interested in purchasing any banks products for example the rear diff covers their intercooler pipes stuff like that just anything on their website use my affiliate link I would really appreciate it it really helps out the channel immensely I have a lot of work to do I’m going to be swapping the
07:23 engine so head over to my other channel to check that out and hopefully we can get this thing back on the road but we’ll see you on the next one stay tuned
Josh from Truck Master Garage has a problem. His stock engine oil cooler died. “These engine coolers are prone to failure,” Josh explains in his latest how-to video. “It’s extremely important that you guys change this out as soon as possible. You just never know if they fail internally and your engine oil does get mixed in with your coolant. “Unfortunately, that’s the issue I’m having right now. I’d hate to see you guys traveling with your family or pulling a trailer, and this happens.”

While he does not guarantee that the failure is the lynchpin that’ll ruin your truck, he does say that it happens enough to take it seriously. He goes on to show proof of just what a horror show it can be when your coolant and oil mix: “This is a ticking time bomb, and it’s extremely important that you change this out.”

Rigorously tested on stock and performance Duramax builds in the Banks dyno cells, the Oil Cooler Upgrade is a heavy-duty, cooling animal that produces 31% better heat reduction than its stock counterpart. The additional cooling plates and improved oil flow increase the available surface area utilized for heat transfer, shedding more BTUs of heat while maintaining proper oil pressure. Gale does a great job of going over the Oil Cooler in great detail in this video here. But don’t take our word for it. Listen to Josh and watch him install the oil cooler that could save your truck’s engine.
