GMC Denali Derringer Tuner Adds Low-End Torque

Matt Rhoades, a member of the Banks Test Pilot program and owner of a private underground utility company, relies heavily on his 2024 GMC Denali for business. The Iowan drives between 250 and 500 miles daily for contracts with wind farms, gas companies, and US Cellular. For someone who tows a fully loaded 42’ toy hauler weighing around 17,500 lbs, performance matters. According to Matt, the new Derringer has been a game-changer. “I’m pretty ecstatic!,” he says. “The low-end torque on this thing is so powerful.

“I used to take it easy on the road, but now, I don’t know how many people I’ve passed!” With the Derringer High Output tuner set to level 6 for towing and level 3 for city driving, Matt notes he has “plenty of power,”and when paired with the Banks PedalMonster, the experience is nothing short of awesome. “Because I can set my throttle’s sensitivity, it feels like a rocket booster that mixes with the Derringer’s power.

Having the upgraded iDash Pro as the interface also earns high marks. “I love the integration with the phone. The ability to switch things around on your gauges using your phone makes set up so much easier. The screen is super crisp and easy to read. And, being able to do over the air updates is also a big plus for me.”

“Banks has exceeded all my expectations,” Matt concludes. “People keep asking when a delete is coming for the 2024s, but honestly, you don’t need one. The Derringer and PedalMonster combo keeps your emissions compliant and still delivers all the performance you’ll ever need.”

Engineering the GMC Denali Derringer Tuner: Torque, Emissions & ActiveSafety

In the modern era of encrypted engine control modules under GM’s Global B architecture, many diesel owners mistakenly believe that deleting emissions hardware or bench-flashing the factory ECM is necessary to unlock significant towing power. The GMC Denali Derringer tuner takes a fundamentally different engineering path. As an intelligent, microprocessor-driven inline tuner, the Derringer taps directly into factory sensor streams—including manifold absolute pressure (MAP) and fuel rail pressure—while actively communicating over the vehicle’s high-speed OBD-II CAN bus network. By calculating true engine operating load, coolant temperature, transmission gear, and exhaust gas temperatures in real time, the Derringer delivers up to +86 horsepower and +78 lb-ft of torque precisely where heavy-duty work happens: between 2,200 and 2,800 RPM. Most importantly, it accomplishes this while keeping the diesel particulate filter (DPF), selective catalytic reduction (SCR), and all factory diagnostic self-checks fully intact, achieving true 50-state emissions legality under CARB Executive Orders.

Traditional “pressure box” tuners and crude inline modules operate blind—they artificially spike common-rail fuel pressure across all driving conditions without regard for engine thermal limits or transmission clutch slip. The Derringer avoids powertrain damage through Banks’ patented ActiveSafety architecture. The module continuously monitors transmission slip ratio, engine coolant temperature, and exhaust gas temperatures. If the transmission begins to slip during a heavy-load shift, or if engine coolant exceeds safe operational thresholds during an extreme uphill tow, the Derringer automatically ramps down its added power within milliseconds to protect drivetrain components. Once conditions normalize, power is smoothly restored. In the event of any hardware or communication fault, internal bypass relays seamlessly revert the vehicle to 100% stock operation, preventing limp-mode derates or roadside breakdowns.

When combined with the Banks PedalMonster and iDash Pro, the Derringer creates an integrated, responsive performance ecosystem. While the Derringer delivers substantial mid-range torque, factory drive-by-wire accelerator pedal lag can delay power delivery off the line. The PedalMonster eliminates this dead pedal feel with 30 customizable response curves and 5 Launch Trim levels, drawing clean 12V power from OBD-II with patented Reverse Safety to protect against unintended acceleration while backing up. Controlled wirelessly via the 52mm iDash Pro and mobile smartphone app, the system allows drivers to toggle tuning levels on the fly, adjust gauge display parameters, datalog engine metrics at high sample rates, and receive over-the-air firmware updates with zero laptop tuning required.
