Duramax Derringer Tuner: GM Diesel Tech Review

“It’s a different truck!” exclaims Steven Laperriere. The GM Diesel technician can’t contain his feelings on what the Derringer has done to his ’24 GMC’s performance. “This truck is a daily driver, and I had about 26,000 km on it before I installed the Derringer, and now I have around 32,000. I noticed a huge difference in power my first time driving it with the Derringer. I look forward to the additional torque every time I step on the throttle. I tow a 32-foot bumper-pull trailer, and having the Derringer installed makes towing effortless!”

“I’m a GM Diesel tech, and I’d recommend the Derringer to anyone who has a Duramax. “The fact that I can have all of this added power and it doesn’t change any of the factory calibrations, AND I still have my warranty. I don’t see why ANYONE would go another route. It’s so intelligently done, with Banks using the engine’s own sensors to produce more power without modifying anything in the ECM. We get a lot of guys coming here to the install department wanting to do deletes, and it doesn’t make any sense when you have an option like Derringer. You keep everything on truck, stay legal, and the performance is outstanding.”

“With the iDash Pro, I have the Derringer control on it. When I’m towing I can keep an eye on temperatures and soot levels in my DPF. Honestly, everything, including something as simple as being able to change the colors of the elements on the screen, is just so cool. I don’t even think that there’s anything Banks missed on it.”

Why Dealership Technicians Choose Inline Microprocessors Over ECM Flashes

Modern GM diesel engine control modules (ECMs), especially on 2017–2026 L5P Duramax trucks, feature heavily encrypted firmware and non-volatile flash counters. Flashing the factory computer with a conventional handheld programmer leaves a permanent digital footprint—such as mismatched Calibration Verification Numbers (CVN)—that dealership diagnostic tools instantly flag during warranty claims. For truck owners who rely on their factory powertrain warranty while towing heavy equipment, an ECM reflash carries unacceptable financial risk.

The Banks Derringer takes an entirely different engineering approach. Functioning as an external microprocessor connected directly to the truck’s high-speed CAN bus network, the Derringer monitors live engine telemetry hundreds of times per second. By actively tracking exhaust gas temperature (EGT), engine coolant temperature, transmission gear selection, and torque converter lockup, the Derringer dynamically layers in power only when the powertrain can safely handle it. During gear shifts or high-heat towing conditions, it automatically pulls back power to protect the Allison 10-speed transmission and prevent drivetrain stress.

When paired with the iDash Pro, drivers gain full interactive control over power levels alongside mission-critical telemetry that the factory dashboard hides. Truck owners can monitor real-time DPF soot saturation percentages, track active exhaust regenerations to avoid shutting down the engine mid-cycle, and read and clear diagnostic trouble codes. Because the Derringer installs completely inline using OEM-grade sealed connectors, removing it leaves the truck in 100% factory condition with zero ECM footprint.
