TFL Truck Mastering the iDash

TFL (The Fast Lane) Truck guys are back with another video putting a new truck through their grueling towing tests. The test subject: the all-new Duramax-powered 2024 Chevy Silverado on their I70 Ike Gauntlet route. The truck tows a 35-ft gooseneck trailer with an HD RAM on it. They start at an elevation of 11,158 feet traveling up to the infamous Eisenhower / Johnson tunnel. This first portion of the test is a downhill cruise using just the truck’s exhaust brake. With the truck in tow/haul mode, the test measures how well the truck works to maintain the downhill speed of 50 mph by modulating the turbine’s adjustable vanes and transmission, without using the truck’s service brakes.

Equipped with the iDash DataMonster as a “flight-recorder” and its data logging feature enabled, they start their test trying to keep the truck below 60 mph. At the end of the 8-mile stretch, the iDash shows their recorded speed, engine coolant temperature, and engine oil temperature. The iDash DataMonster is capable of actually recording 97 more parameters, but these three were the ones they wanted to concentrate on for their test.

Although they could have viewed the recordings on the iDash itself, they opted to graph it using Banks’ free website datalogviewer.com. The logs not only show the recorded parameters but when the service brakes were applied. Part two of their test was heading uphill to see how well it could keep a respectable cruising speed. Which was also recorded on the iDash DataMonster. It turns out the ’24 Duramax did alright in their various tests earning a 4.25 out of 5 stars.
