NEW CAMSHAFT! Killing A Duramax Pt 13

Gale attempts to reach 1,000 HORSEPOWER with this DURAMAX with STOCK internals with a new camshaft. To do that, Banks is working with Comp Cams to design a camshaft that will allow the engine to spin faster while keeping the valves open longer. In the last episode, we got it up to 912 horsepower.

L5P Head Gasket

We got a lot of comments suggesting that we killed the head gasket. Gale puts that to rest immediately. “The L5P has way superior head gasket compared to anything that came before it.”

Gale measures the valve-to-piston clearance to prepare for the new camshaft.

Valve to Piston Clearance – Prep for a new camshaft

Gale sets up check-in springs to measure the valve-to-piston clearance. Gale pulls the heads to begin changing the cam.

Fuel pump upgrade

Not only were we out of the cam, but we were also out of fuel pump. So we swapped the stock pump out for a new S&S Bosch 14-millimeter stroker.

Valve springs

Engineer Mike ran measures the pressure the valve springs can withstand.

Gale wraps the episode by showing a cutaway to demonstrate what’s going on with the valve action versus the pistons.
