Gale Banks History for Sale
A complete Gale Banks Marine Chevy big block twin-turbo system recently went up for sale! Tyler Ackroyd is reluctantly letting this piece of history go. “I don’t really want to sell it. I’m just looking at doing something different with a supercharger and old-school mechanical fuel injection. My garage is just STUFFED and I need to start purging.”
Banks was the dominant player in marine forced induction systems back in the 70’s and 80’s. Today, that historical fact has been eclipsed by its diesel performance reputation. “I had been looking for this system for quite some time, and it was really hard to find a complete vintage package. I ended up buying the system from an old offshore racer about 4 years ago, but he wouldn’t sell the turbo system alone. He wanted the buyer to take a box of random parts too. I parted out what I didn’t need and made a complete, badass system. The final setup was put on my built engine and dynoed at about 900 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque. It was pretty incredible in my 1977 Hallett mini cruiser. It made about 14 psi of boost! When the turbos came on it took off like a rocket. I ran it for about two years until a buddy of mine gave me bad gas that caused me to go through 4 rings on the engine.”
