S-1 Express
Key West, Florida — After clinching the ‘Offshore II’ National Championship and setting the APBA Kilo Record at 114.141 mph, Butch Ryan’s ‘Express’ goes on to dominate the Offshore World Championship with a resounding place first place in Offshore II.
The team stated “The reliability is incredible, we had NO ENGINE PROBLEMS all season! We ran five races plus the Kilo’s on one pair of turbocharged engines without rebuilding. Most teams are lucky to get one race from their injected engines. Consider that we’re running an offshore I 38′ Active Cat with offshore II engines and you really get the idea!”
Banks engines are renowned for their dependability and ability to run at full throttle for hours on end. That dependability stood out in 1983 when S-1 Express, powered by Banks Stage V turbos, set the APBA kilo record and won the World and National Offshore II Championships.
Using the Banks Turbocharged engines he had run all season, Butch Ryan drove Express to a World Championship at Key West. Then on the same engines he set the flying kilometer record. APBA had enough of Gale Banks, so they banned Turbocharging.
