Steve Harsany opened in 1991 as a diesel fuel injection shop. “Back then there wasn’t much in the way of diesel performance,” recalls Steve, “except for the offerings from Banks for the GM 6.2 and 6.5 liter and the Ford 6.9 and 7.3-liter non-turbo’d diesels. We installed a lot of the turbo systems and exhaust systems. We ended up adding a bay so that we could do installs. Back then it was just a couple of guys and me. Now we’ve worked our way up to 14 employees, have a drive-in facility with typically 3 to 4 techs on hand, still have the fuel injection shop, and sell parts.” To put it into perspective Purrformance Diesel has gone from a 30’ by 40’ shop to 15,000 sq. ft. complex. But they’re not just injection, repair, maintenance and parts service. Purrformance is also a valid engine customer. “Since our early days we aligned ourselves with many OE manufacturers. We’re a Cummins dealer for all on and off-highway products, for instance.”

Virtually everything has changed with the business, especially the advent of online selling and communicating.

“About 5 years ago or so things started really changing when we started seeing the upswing in internet usage. There was a time when a guy just down the street would call if he had questions, now they email.” Another part that has changed since their opening is the modernization of the vehicles that they work on. “I know a lot of shop owners who didn’t want to change but that mentality actually lead them to their demise.”

One of the things that Steve has done is to keep the business current with testing equipment that has moved forward with the times, making what they are capable of doing more relevant in these modern days.

There’s so much more to diesel performance than just blowing black smoke. That’s just wasted raw fuel! There’s more like drivability and torque rise… it’s not just about changing fuel tables and adding timing. And all that way of thinking had given our industry a black eye.
