CoolRunner Pan Impresses

00:05 good morning everybody so we’re working on a very cool project today it is going to this is the lower oil pan it’s made by Banks and it’s going to go on my 17 Chevy durama Max you don’t got to have a lift but lift definitely makes life much easier uh my friend dust is going to
00:22 help me install this pan so this is the way the truck looks underneath and what we’re looking at is where going to start with draining the oil removing all the skid plates out of the way which is actually going to be just the middle skid plate and our plan for the day
00:38 is we are going to loosen the diff and just lower it just to get get access to those bolts the oil fan bolts we’re going to unclip those uh transmission cooling lines as well as get them completely out of the side of the transmission it’s just a plastic ring retaining ring and down snap and uh
00:57 we’re going to move the lines out the way but right now we’re draining for the start and uh I’ll be right back with you as soon as we start removing thing all right we uh we are removing the cross brace now which is what size of the sockets are those man uh 18s both 18s okay so 18 open end and socket
01:19 yeah yes as usual working on a Chevy got to have a bfh so we’re going to get this is uh get this bolt knocked out and there you go might need a pry bar for the um for the BR yep that’s it always a wear eye protection look at you OA approv right there yeah I think that’s the side you got to um it out
02:03 from oh yeah you got that okay that’s it all right now everything’s out of the way we’re going to do the probably the transmission lines next oil is drained cross Braes out the way and we’re going to start looking into lower disconnect this uh 4×4 motor um there’s going to be
02:30 a red tab you just push the tab out and then you know compress it and pull it pull the um pull the connector out right so we’re doing now is we’re going to loosen those uh transmission lines and there is a metal clip there’s a plastic uh keeper and then there’s a metal clip that we got to
02:47 um pretty much remove on snap and then the line’s going to come out there’s a special tool for this PE work every yeah oh yeah 90° peek is usually one of the best thing just make sure you don’t lose that uh ring it’s going to make for a bad day see got it that’s what the ring looks like all
03:19 right so it’s going to lose just a little bit transmission fluid it’s not going to be much at all but we’re going to use a pan all right yeah this should slide okay and that’s pretty much all we’re going to lose not going to be much more coming up iten those 21s on each side of the uh axle front axle
04:38 right that’s see want to support all right so where we at right now is we loosen those two uh studs right there we kept this um side connected just loosen it and the diff pretty much leans it gives you a lot of room a ton of room right there to work with so we should I
04:57 believe we have like 26 of those 10 mm bolts all around the perimeter of the oil pan all right I’m going to loosen everything we’re going to use an electric impact cuz that’s a lot of a lot of um a lot of bolts and then we’re going to scrape this thing off oh yeah you got it you got it okay
05:27 so we end up taking this side bracket off just to get a better access to the oil pan the tool that comes with bank’s kit it’s all right but it didn’t work in my application so we use the good old snap-on screwdriver and going very careful without damaging the upper pan
05:41 and at this point we just got to keep on going we got some plenty of room on the on the right side and uh yeah just going to keep knocking it in and cutting that RTV after that which should be pretty close and try to get it from different angle all right we got it off couple
06:11 screwdrivers they got some oil in it actually going to show you how much oil stays in the pan okay all right yes all right so the approach was uh using a couple of those tools this didn’t work for me unfortunately I wish it did but it didn’t so it was good old school
06:40 scrapers and uh pry bares and we had to go very very careful not to crack anything so now I’m going to run a razor blade all around the edge of that pan uh lower uh upper pan get everything cleaned up and we should be ready for the um for the install starting to get everything ready for the
07:04 uh oil pan new oil pan install this is Allen hw5 we’re going to get it tight the side port um then I’m going to clean everything up uh and I will install that gray RTV I’ll be back I’ll show you how to do we stand on High Ground watching all so here’s where we at we got we decided
07:35 to put this bracket back in just because the the other pan is going to be pretty I mean it’s going to be substantially bigger so we won’t be able to uh pass it right beside it so we got this back in we hadn’t tightened it uh yet and um what else we got is everything is cleaned up all the edges
07:53 are cleaned up there’s still going to be oil on it we’re going to spray this off um the diff is we decided to completely loosen the diff and we we got it support it if you’re doing it at home on jack stands then definitely use a um maybe a jack a floor jack or whatnot but
08:08 everything else is um that oil keep keeps dripping dripping but yeah we’re getting ready to install the pan in just a okay it’s going in you got to be careful with all the uh maneuvering it pass the axle and pass the uh steering linkage but we got a pearl in the job
08:37 now so just a matter of getting it up in there now I’m going to walk around that comes right here yeah I got a bunch mhm yep you on it now I can get it started move towards yourself just a little bit I can’t start it you’re start mm- I can’t start it you want hold it in we
09:25 got a few bolts started and that that sucker is massive that’s a real deal right there so we’re going to start all these bolts by hand let the RTV cure just a little while for a little while and then we’re going to um tighten those to to spec I mention the torque spec in just a
09:47 few so a good thing another one of the many good things about the bank skit is it comes with a extra bolt that goes right there um that replaces the factory longer Bolt so I put it much just install it there get it tight and um we’re finishing finishing up those bolts all around the edge of the
10:13 pan let’s see super important that you might want to consider and this is like the uh the key mess up on my end and it’s job is uh make sure before before you bow this pan up you have the transmission line back in there place right there and not hanging down cuz we literally had to
10:40 push the engine away and and slide this past uh slide these lines past the uh the pan and the crossmember that was a big deal so I’m glad we were able to get them in but make sure before you install this oil pan to get this bracket back in and to get this um also don’t forget
10:57 your spacers if you got a deep drop and make sure you get this transmission lines up in there before you install this fan so this that’s kind of a big deal out never up news comment right quick on the the fit of the bank pan how it goes over the cross brace and just all around I’m very
12:06 very very impressed I am impressed with the fact that it comes with the RTV kit with the uh magnetic drain drain plug and just I mean bolts and everything is just so nice and just Bam Bam you’re done with it and the fact that you’re getting uh two more quartz capacity it’s it’s actually super super
12:29 nice nice yes I am very happy we’re going to um finish the oil change so we’re going to remove the filter right there and swap out the filter but everything is back in place back in Spec um everything looks just beautiful I’m actually pretty impressed we only have two hours in this so we are training
12:51 lines everything’s in there too so I think we did really good I love this fan look at all the CLE clear and yeah that’s important part I mean it’s not going to be draining onto on top of this cross membr anymore this is just beautiful it’s just common sense stuff that’s just pure
13:09 impressive yeah bks for the win out Never follow up on the good news I know too much yeah I know nothing all I don’t see anything I know too much and I know nothing at all we can’t stand on higher
On Tony Chumakov’s Bimmer and Duramax maintenance and upgrade channel, you’ll mostly see more of the Bimmer side than the Duramax, but from the looks of it, that’s changing as his Duramax content is catching on. Tony recently installed a Banks CoolRunner Oil Pan on his 2017 L5P Duramax Silverado. “It took 2.5 hours from start to finish. It was an easy job, the pan fits well, it doesn’t drain on top of the crossmember get a mess everywhere. It drains all of the old oil. We had about 0.6 quarts of old oil still left in the pan thanks to the silly GM drain plug design. And it definitely helps shed heat better. Of course, having two additional quarts is a very nice bonus!”
