Biden, “Pump The Brakes” on EVs
Despite what has been said to be promising growth of electric vehicles and an aggressive push by our government, more than 3,000 U.S. auto dealers have signed a petition requesting President Biden to repeal the 2030 mandate on selling electric vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) proposed Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards that require passenger cars and light trucks to improve fuel efficiency by 2% and 4%, respectively, beginning in 2027. Under these rules, pickup trucks and work vans must boost fuel efficiency by 10% every year starting in 2030. The Biden administration argued that these standards would help combat climate change and save Americans money. However, some dealerships are concerned about consumers’ ability to afford expensive electric vehicles. They are asking, in their own words, for President Biden to “pump the brakes” on his plans.
Even with government incentives, electric vehicles are becoming a harder sell, causing inventory of new EVs to pile up, while demand for hybrid and gas-powered vehicles remains strong. “These vehicles are ideal for many, and we believe their appeal will grow over time,” wrote auto dealers in their letter to Biden. “The reality, however, is that electric vehicle demand today is not keeping up with the large influx of BEVs (battery electric vehicles) arriving at our dealerships prompted by the current regulations. BEVs are stacking up on our lots.” Coupled with the cost of getting an EV, today’s consumer also grapples with concerns about EV vehicles’ range, and battery life in colder climates. It’s difficult for many would-be EV owners to charge at home with no garage or dedicated parking spot. To make matters worse, most EVs are so complicated, that few local mechanics have the proper equipment to work on them. Let’s hope this petition gets some attention.
