2024 GMC Denali 2500 Duramax Ram-Air Intake: Towing Review

“The install went super smooth and the instructions were spot on,” says Mike Krueger, a member of the Banks Test Pilot product development program. “Getting through it felt like a real win, especially considering I’m not mechanically inclined.” Mike recently upgraded his bone-stock 2024 GMC 2500 Denali with the Banks Ram-Air Intake System, and the results exceeded his expectations. Despite having no previous plans to modify his truck, the straightforward install and immediate improvements made this upgrade a clear success.

Mike regularly tows a hefty 37’ fifth wheel loaded with side-by-sides and makes it a point to get out at least once a month. After installing the Ram-Air, he immediately noticed how much smoother the truck performed, particularly during low-end takeoff and hill climbs. “The engine just seemed so much happier,” he explains. Even when unloaded, he could feel the enhanced responsiveness in everyday driving.

The most impressive results from the new Ram-Air came while towingunder heavy load. “More consistent power, quicker response, and no check engine lights,” Mike reports—results made possible by Banks’ patented Air Mass Control Module, which preserves factory ECM communication while flowing significantly more air mass.. For someone hauling heavy loads regularly, that kind of performance boost matters. What started as a small, simple upgrade turned into a game-changing improvement in how the truck runs under load and on the road. “I wasn’t really planning on doing any mods,” Mike adds, “but for something this easy to install, it’s totally worth it.”

Overcoming GM’s 2024 Induction Challenge: The Patented Air Mass Control Module

When upgrading the induction system on the 2024 6.6L Duramax L5P, traditional intake designs run into a major obstacle: GM’s factory ECM calibration. For 2024, GM tightened allowable airflow boundaries and introduced a Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor that broadcasts both an analog and a high-frequency digital signal simultaneously. Aftermarket intakes that merely enlarge the tube cross-section without addressing this dual signal trigger diagnostic trouble codes and check engine lights, while intakes that retain stock tube diameters fail to deliver meaningful airflow gains.

Banks overcame this limitation by engineering the patented Air Mass Control Module (U.S. Patent 11,193,441). Integrated directly into the Ram-Air harness, the module deciphers, conditions, and scales the MAF sensor signals before communicating with the factory ECM. This patented electronic solution allows the Banks intake to feature a massive induction SuperTube, an oversized low-restriction filter, and a smooth bellowed silicone coupler without triggering check engine lights or throwing fuel trims out of range.

Fitment note: Because induction architectures evolve rapidly, vehicle model years must be carefully verified. The 2024 Duramax Ram-Air intake (Part #42285 / 42285-D) is engineered specifically for the 2024 model year. For 2025+ Duramax trucks, GM introduced an integrated crankcase ventilation sensor, requiring a dedicated 2025+ system that pairs the Air Mass Control Module with a Crankcase Ventilation Control Module.
