Pikes Peak punishes any turbo system that cannot keep up with altitude, load, and constant speed changes. Here, the twin-turbo setup gave the Chevy-powered racer the horsepower to accelerate harder and pull taller gearing, but the real key was control. We adjusted the system and added altitude compensation technology from our Banks Defense work so boost could vary continuously with driver demand and the rapidly changing environment on the mountain. Matched with the ECU, it became a complete engine management package that kept the power responsive and usable instead of peaky or inconsistent. That is why the car was suddenly covering ground much faster and forcing a complete rethink of familiar sections of the course.
The lap begins with a rolling start rather than from a standstill. As the car approaches the start line, the driver is already accelerating, and the clock begins right at the marked point around the corner.
