More Oil Didn’t Win. Airflow Did

A bigger oil cavity may slow heat rise at first, but without real airflow it also hangs onto that heat longer under load.

The real issue with flat-back differential covers is simple: extra oil capacity is not the same thing as better cooling. In our towing test, the flat-back cover heated a little slower than stock, but it also cooled down slower. That means it was storing heat, not rejecting it. The Banks Ram-Air Differential Cover Kit takes a different approach. Instead of relying on more oil, it uses forced-air cooling to move heat out of the lubricant and through the cover fins. In the climb, it ran cooler than both the stock cover and the flat-back. Once the road leveled out, the gap widened even more because airflow kept pulling heat out. That is the point: more oil does not cool by itself. Airflow does. If you tow, climb grades, or work the truck in hotter conditions, faster heat rejection is what protects the gears and bearings.

1. Three-Day Test Setup

This final chapter of the Ram-Air Diff Cover testing summarizes a three-day towing evaluation that began each day in Azusa, California.

Ambient temperature at the start was 78°F on all three days, providing a consistent baseline for comparing differential-cover performance under repeatable real-world conditions.

2. Route and Load Conditions

Each test began with a 58-mile drive at 55 mph before the climb.

The truck then pulled an 11,650-pound load up a 5-mile, 6% grade, creating a sustained towing heat load before lubricant temperatures were measured at the summit.

3. Temperatures at the Summit

At the top of the climb, the stock differential cover reached 205°F.

The flat-back cover measured 199°F, while the Banks Ram-Air Diff Cover recorded the lowest temperature at 192.5°F.

Under the same towing and grade conditions, the Ram-Air produced the lowest lubricant temperature of the three covers.

4. Heat Gain Comparison

Based on the summit measurements, the Ram-Air cover showed a 2X lower heat gain, despite using almost four quarts less oil.

The comparison demonstrates that the lower temperature was not achieved simply by increasing lubricant capacity. The Ram-Air maintained a lower temperature rise while operating with substantially less oil.

5. Extended Cool-Down Segment

After reaching the summit, testing continued for another 5 miles on flat ground.

This portion of the route measured how quickly each differential cover could shed heat once the sustained climbing load was removed. During this section, the temperature difference between the covers became even greater.

6. Temperatures After Five More Miles

After the additional five miles, the stock cover measured 195°F and the flat-back cover measured 192.5°F.

The Banks Ram-Air Diff Cover had dropped to 178.6°F, making it substantially cooler than either comparison cover after the same recovery distance.

7. Cool-Down Performance Result

The testing showed the Ram-Air cover delivering 5X better cool-down performance during this portion of the evaluation.

Once the climb ended, the Ram-Air shed heat considerably faster than either the stock or flat-back cover, increasing its temperature advantage during the flat-road recovery.

8. Implications Under Harder Use

The test was conducted while towing 11,650 pounds up a 6% grade in 78°F ambient conditions.

Based on those results, the video raises the question of how much more significant the cooling advantage could become under harsher conditions, including hotter weather, steeper grades, and trailers approaching 30,000 pounds.
